Hold Your Cards
( “You Go First” )
This is a great strategy to use when you want to get the other side to reveal their offer or position first. When you have an idea what you want to offer but not sure if what you are thinking is fair and reasonable, getting the other side to go first will allow you to receive information you might not otherwise have known.
If you are able to get the other side to go first, you can see what their position is and make adjustments to your proposal based on what they present as theirs. Maybe you have different ideas or proposals based on your research and don’t know what the best course of action is to take. Hearing what the other side is presenting enables you to make a solid decision that you would not have otherwise been able to make. This works in relationships too.
You might have an idea about how the situation is going to go or maybe you’ve come up with an idea of what the problem or situation is and have prepared your response or proposal accordingly. Allowing the other side to go first may reveal some facts that you didn’t know about and may have some bearing on how you proceed.
Finding out facts that you didn’t realize existed may help in the outcome of the agreement. Letting the other side go first is a great way to get more facts and make better decisions. The ultimate goal is creating Win-Win results.
See you next week!
